Burgundy Bathroom reveal

Something tells me red will be making it's way into plenty of homes this year. I love a balance of old & new in our home. When my husband bought it, it didn't have an obvious style. It lacked any special trim work & character. It was essentially a box. Last year my style changed a lot (Or I just finally decided to truly tap into the style I love, unapologetically) & we essentially assigned a style to our home. I love old revived colonials, Victorians with a bit of a modern flare, antiques but crisp white linens, marble countertops or fireplace surrounds next to deep mahogany tones. Like I said...a balance of old & new. Que.... our bathroom. In fall of last year I walked into our bathroom wearing a burgundy sweater & caught a glimpse of it in the mirror. I made a joke about painting this room that color & low & behold It wasn't a joke. A red toned room actually felt like the final color to round out our home's color palette. SO, here's what we used to pull off a deep red bathroom with a vintage essence while also keeping it design forward!

Walls & Trim -

One way to bring character into a room is through the use of trim & paneling on your walls. Something that feels very 19th century (because you can actually date this back to the Victorian era) is the look of bead board! This is a very affordable option for elevating your walls & is relatively easy to work with. We used these 4x8 foot panels from Lowes. We cut each one in half height wise to cover the bottom half of our bathroom walls & so we only ended up needing two of these panels & spending around $60 to pull this off! The next thing we knew we needed was a dramatic chair rail to top off our panels. We went with this pine chair railing also from Lowes & think it added just the right amount of ~drama~ We have a small home so we try not to throw massive millwork into our spaces, the scale would probably be off.

Choosing the right Burgundy -

There are so many stunning shades of burgundy out there. Some lean more red, some brown & some more purple. I was open to any one of those but felt red would be a little more sophisticated so I stuck to my gut when shuffling through samples. The four I brought home to try were all Benjamin Moore colors; Nicolson Red, Beaujolais, Hadley Red & New London Burgundy. After some investigating I realized Hadley & Beaujolais are actually identical colors. New London Burgundy had the most purple tones in it & Nicolson Red was the darkest with a perfect balance of them all. Needless to say, we went with Nicolson Red. Contrary to popular belief, a dark color can actually make a small room feel larger because it creates the illusion of depth. We decided to paint the ceiling the same color & this decision even added height to our standard 8 ft ceilings! Our bathroom ceilings are also beadboard so this ties in well with the beadboard we installed ourselves!

Working with what we have -

We installed black hexagon floor tiles in here over 2 years ago & for now those work just fine. The white vanity doesn't translate as well as we'd like. It's stark white & has very clean crisp edges, so it feels sort of builder grade but we did swap the knobs out for some simple glass knobs & I always say a small change can go a long way. Same deal with the light fixture - It works.

Mirror | Chrome Faucet | Bust Planter | Soap Dish | Towel Ring | Double Towel Rack | Glass Cabinet Pulls

No detail is too small -

To finish off our bathroom we did swap out our faucet for this stunning & affordable option from Amazon. The polished chrome finish does add a modern touch to the room & the contrast against the dark walls is *chefs kiss* I'm all for mixed metals but we decided to keep it simple with a classic chrome towel ring & towel bar. The color of this room is a statement on it's own so I didn't feel like we needed too many focal points. The wooden oval mirror was my very first purchase when we decided we were painting this room red. To add a little height to the room we actually ordered regular linen curtains so we could hang them closer to the ceiling & a 90' liner so we'll see how that pans out. Some darker outlet covers felt necessary and of course a dash of art here & there is always a must.
